Dependent Personality Disorder

Dependent Personality disorder is defined by a need to be taken care of. Those with the disorder display dependent and submissive behaviour patterns, wanting others to make their decisions for them. Even the simplest everyday decisions seem daunting, and individuals seek constant reassurance and advice from others. Criticism and disapproval easily hurts those with the disorder and they usually bend over backwards to cater for the needs of others, clinging to them for comfort.

Individuals with this disorder fear rejection and lack self-confidence, they also fear separation and constantly try to cope with their anxiety of abandonment. Being alones leaves the sufferer feeling helpless and uncomfortable. Those with Dependent Personality Disorder typically jump from one relationship to another, often remaining in abusive relationships. Being with anyone is considered better than being alone. When a relationship ends, the individual is devastated.

Individuals rarely initiate projects or activities on their own, and though they have ambition, imagination and energy, are often held back by their lack of self-confidence. Not believing in their own judgement and abilities, they leave it up to others to make the decisions.
